What does Socialism have to do with an 8yr old?

By Dat To

It is fascinating to me to be a parent and to see ideas grow in my children’s minds. It is interesting to see them understand or misunderstand ideas, or seeing or not seeing the connection between separate ideas. We feel responsible and are vigilant in influencing the thought life of our children.

At lunchtime today, my 6 yr old daughter Grace was telling us about the 4 tissue boxes that she had collected to make some craft. She didn’t know what she was going to make, but knew that having more boxes will give her more choices. Maybe a tissue box robot she mused.

Her 8 yr old brother Joshua asked her if he could have a box even though he has little interest in crafts. She said ‘yes’. Five minutes later he asked for a second box. My wife and I jumped in and said that he can have the next empty box from our home. He suggested that he should have the next two boxes since Grace had four already. WOW!

My wife and I presented Josh with a few related scenarios and asked him to pick what he thought was the right choice. My wife asked him what seemed ‘fair’ if he was peeling pastachios (which we do with the kids sometimes) for 10mins and then Grace came along and demanded half of his peeled nuts because she had none? I asked him, ‘if a friend came over and saw your many lego creations (which he loves to spend his time doing) and demanded some of yours because he had none, would that be right?’

Both of them understood the ridiculousness of these suggestions when presented in these examples. Taking some results from those who have invested the time and effort in something that we have no interest in investing our time and effort is wrong.

My kids almost became mini-socialists. It came from a misunderstanding of ‘fairness’. Looking at someone’s end result, not what it took that person to get what they got and their level of interest/ passion, and expecting equalization. Getting results without work at the expense of someone else is natural to us.
